What courses fulfill the “Upper Division Physiology” pre-requisite requirement ?
The upper division physiology course must be a science based course typically offered by the Science Department. Upper division means a junior or senior level course. Typically the course has 3 credit hours of lecture and 1 credit hour of lab. Four credit hours are required. Some examples of course titles are Medical Physiology, Human Physiology, Vertebrate Physiology, or Mammalian Physiology. Check with your university to find out what they offer. For this particular requirement, we absolutely DO NOT accept sophomore level Anatomy and Physiology courses nor Exercise Physiology courses and will not entertain a course waiver request.
Can I apply to the program before I have all prerequisites completed?
Yes. Application to the program can be made before all prerequisites are completed, but all prerequisites must be completed by May of the year of admission.
Can any of the prerequisites be waived or substituted?
Applicants can request a waiver/substitution for specific prerequisites by contacting the program Admissions Committee or program Graduate Advisor who will advise the applicant on the procedure to be followed. Often upper division courses in a particular discipline can be substituted for lower division courses. The substitution/waiver form must be received by December 1 to be considered.
How many observation hours are required by the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and do they have to be done at a particular setting?
The DPT Program requires 50 hours of observation that must be completed under a licensed physical therapist. The purposes of these observation hours are to 1)introduce you to the profession of physical therapy and 2) build a relationship with a physical therapist who can give the successful applicant a strong recommendation to the UTEP DPT program. We do not require that these hours be completed in a particular physical therapy setting, but it is recommended that the applicant try to observe physical therapy services being delivered in more than one setting (i.e., inpatient, outpatient, schools). Check the yellow pages or internet for physical therapy practices in your geographical area.
Is the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) required for admission to the DPT Program and is there a required score?
The DPT Program requires the GRE as part of the application process. There is no minimum score, but the applicant's score is factored into the overall evaluation of the application.
Does the DPT Program require an interview?
Yes. Interviews with potential applicants will be scheduled once a completed application has been reviewed, and all requirements are completed or are in the process of being completed.
How many students does the DPT Program admit per year?
The incoming class will include a maximum of 36 students.
Does the DPT Program require internships and will there be any expenses associated with them?
There are four (4) full-time clinical experiences included in the curriculum. The first three (3) are each eight (8) weeks in duration with the final clinical being twelve (12) weeks. These clinical experiences will be coordinated through the program's Director of Clinical Education (DCE). Expenses associated with these clinicals are the responsibility of the student. There are some opportunities in El Paso, but the student should expect to go out of town for some clinical experiences.
